Abstract

'A Section of Now' aims to re-establish a dialogue between architecture and society that would allow architecture to begin to contend with and address our changed and changing social norms. The publication serves as a meditation on new behaviours, rituals, and values and their spatial implications, and seeks to catalyse urban and architectural interventions that accommodate, influence, and, in some cases, pre-empt our new lived realities. Authors address topics ranging from the safety of digital spaces to how normative life trajectories affect the elderly and the many selves each of us puts forward, while architects present frameworks for, among other things, spaces for blended families, thirty-year-old retirees, and contested monuments. Bringing together analytical essays about the contemporary moment and the direction in which society is moving, projective texts that outline new architectural types to address societal needs, alongside television series, photography, and architecture and design projects, 'A Section of Now' outlines a new relationship between the spaces in which we live and the ways we live within them. Architect, editor, and curator Giovanna Borasi is Director of the Canadian Centre for Architecture.

Abstract

Embedded in politically and economically charged sites in the Pearl River Delta, Mongolia, and the European Union, 51N4E (Johan Anrys and Freek Persyn) and Rural Urban Framework (Joshua Bolchover and John Lin) operate in expanded ecologies of architectural practice, questioning the role of the architect today. By collaborating with policymakers, local contractors, and NGOs, and by engaging their respective labs at ETH Zürich and the University of Hong Kong as key research locations, both offices investigate new forms of cooperation and dialogue as crucial strategies for design. 51N4E and RUF work at the seams of urbanization, with projects situated in transitional settlements in Ulaanbaatar, the rural regions of China, the transforming neighborhoods of Brussels, and Albania’s shifting public spaces. This publication compares their research and design processes in order to question the extents and certainties of architecture against backdrops of indeterminate notions of citizenship, unstable stages of urbanization, and insecure economies and ecologies.

Abstract

"This film is part of a curatorial project carried out by Francesco Garutti while in residence as Emerging Curator 2013-2014 at the Canadian Centre for Architecture. The film explores the controversial story of the planning and politics of a series of overpasses on Long Island, commissioned in the 1920s and 1930s by the influential American public administrator Robert Moses. The story suggests that the bridges had been designed expressly to prevent the passage of buses, thereby only allowing people who could afford to own a car to access Long Island's leisure spaces. The questions that the story raises are timlier now than ever before. They engage with issues of secrecy and control, the morals of power and the effects of technology: What is the relationship between politics and artefacts? How and to what degree can a project's intentions be deliberately concealed? What are the deviously designed effects and the unplanned political consequences of the agency of the artefacts that surround us? The film explores these questions through interviews with four scholars who in the 1980s and 1990s debated possible interpretations of the case. The film alludes rather than explains, interweaving reportage with the abstraction of theories. It mixes the deafening sound of automobiles with the singing of the birds that live along the parkways of Long Island, which are now almost one hundred years old."--Container.

Abstract

The book focuses on the figure of Umberto Riva (1928-2021), one of the masters of Italian architecture, designer and painter. A student of Carlo Scarpa, he inherited from him the artistic and artisanal attitude of the project, the taste for open forms and the sensitivity for an operational scale that extends from the material detail to the landscape. His work ranges from the design of objects and lamps where light becomes the protagonist, to urban housing projects, private and public buildings, exhibition installations and an important painting parenthesis. The book is conceived as an anthology in which the texts of the author Maria Bottero open and close a series of critical essays taken from out-of-print books. It is a mixture of early and more contemporary essays, with the aim of offering a range of critical evolutions around the architect as wide as possible. A precious collaboration with the architect's personal archive and with the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal allowed to retrieve and present his sketches and drawings to the public.

Abstract

"This book unpacks the comprehensive Gordon Matta-Clark collection at the CCA, opening it up to provisional readings from different points of view. Yann Chateigné reorganizes Matta-Clark's library into areas of inquiry, from alchemy to psychoanalysis, as a framework for gathering traces -- written and drawn -- of his thinking. Hila Peleg reassembles hours of discarded film footage, challenging the notion of documentation and returning to view the physical and social contexts. And from hundreds of travel photographs, Kitty Scott constructs a panorama of Matta-Clark's visual notes on the world around him -- a foil to his artworks."--Page 4 of cover.
